Adjunct Position FALL 2019
POSITION
St. Edward's University invites applications for an Adjunct position to teach READ 4343.02 - a Content-Area Literacy course for students seeking 4-8 and 7-12 teaching certification. Job duties will begin mid-August, 2019 and end in Mid-December 2019 when final grades are submitted.
RESPONSIBILITIES Teach one section of READ 4343.02 that covers a broad sequence of topics related to content area literacy.
Class meets on Tu/Th from 11:00am-12:15pm on the St. Edward's University campus.
Other responsibilities include: attending regularly scheduled meetings; conducting surveys; timely communication with supervisor related to course progress; and maintaining office hours.
Course description:
The primary focus of this teacher-preparation course is on strategies designed to develop critical- reading, writing and study skills that maximize secondary students' content area learning (e.g., literature, mathematics, science and social studies). Content area literacy includes the development of comprehension, study skills, metacognitive awareness, purposeful reading, critical thinking, vocabulary, word recognition, writing, questioning and discussion skills. Also addressed are authentic assessment, cooperative learning, instructional technology, motivation, children's and adolescent literature, and special needs learners. This course has an internship component and must be taken prior to student teaching. It is taught in conjunction with a partnering course focused on curriculum and evaluation.
Student Learning Objectives include the following:
- Define content area (disciplinary) literacy and apply that knowledge when considering how to use texts, talk and writing assignments with disciplinary content.
- Recognize, practice and teach the types of thinking that go on while an individual reads.
- Design instructional activities that support that thinking for making meaning during reading.
- Explain how writing is used as a tool for thinking, expression, and communication.
- Design instructional activities that support students' use of writing to make and communicate meaning of disciplinary texts and ideas.
- Consider the ways in which digital technologies have expanded the types of reading and writing that students engage in, both in and out of school, and what that expansion means for academic settings.
- Recognize, practice and teach the types of thinking that go on while an individual reads.
We are currently looking for someone to teach TR 2 3:15.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph. D. or Master's degree in Literacy Studies, Curriculum Studies, Teacher Education, or related discipline preferred.
- Graduate level coursework of at least 18 hours in Literacy Studies and related teacher education coursework required.
- Excellence in teaching is essential and 7-12 public school teaching experience is preferred.
- Graduate level coursework of at least 18 hours in Literacy Studies and related teacher education coursework required.
