Industrial Hygiene Specialist

Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Industrial Hygienist and the Executive Director of EHS, the Industrial Hygiene Specialist is responsible for administering the university's asbestos program and lead program and assisting in other industrial hygiene and laboratory safety programs. This position also entails managing the respiratory protection and medical surveillance program.
This position may be required to respond to university emergencies outside of standard scheduled work hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Three years in the areas of industrial hygiene including but not limited to:
- laboratory safety oversight
- respiratory protection programming
- asbestos and/or lead paint management and abatement
- medical surveillance
Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in industrial hygiene, life sciences, chemistry, or related field
Experience:
- Interpreting building plans and schematics
- Preparing technical reports in a work-related setting
- Testing laboratory safety equipment, or experience using similar equipment and processes
- Developing and delivering training in subject matter related to the duties of this position
- Developing, evaluating and recommending procedures, written training materials and manuals
- Working in a university or research institution
Knowledge of:
- Asbestos abatement regulations and procedures
- Lead-based paint abatement regulations and procedures
- Managing the different components of medical surveillance and respiratory protection programs, including respirator selection, use, care, and fit-testing
- Industrial and/or laboratory ventilation equipment and processes
- Personal protective equipment associated with the abatement of asbestos and lead-based paint materials
- Industrial hygiene rules, regulations and policies
- Laboratory safety rules, regulations and guidelines
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Must be able to:
- Work with hazardous substances
- Lift, carry or otherwise move heavy materials weighing 50 pounds
- Participate in a medical surveillance program
- Wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment including respirators and SCBAs
