Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a dedicated Dispatcher to join its Police Department, offering an opportunity to play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the campus community. As a Dispatcher, you will be responsible for coordinating the response to emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching officers and emergency personnel as needed. You will monitor police, parking, and emergency radio transmissions, maintaining detailed records of service requests in an electronic system. Working closely with the Dispatch Supervisor, you will also support the training and certification of UVPD personnel, ensuring compliance with necessary protocols. Summary of Responsibilities


  • Receives incoming calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for police, parking, EMS, and other campus services. Broadcasts calls to patrol officers instructing them to investigate complaints or requests when appropriate. Enters calls and complaints received into record management system.
  • Monitors alarm systems for all university buildings. Coordinates departmental paging in the event of a campus emergency. Relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community. Controls access to police department and other university secured areas and monitors the department's and school's closed circuit camera and intercom systems.
  • Trains, tests, and affirms the proficiency of users in order to assure compliance with local, federal, and state regulations. TAC is responsible for creating and administering the training and testing for agency users, and this position maintains records of such.
  • Operates a National Crime Information Center NCIC computer, a computer-aided mobile dispatch CAD system, and 8mhz, mhz and mhz radio consoles.
  • Performs various clerical duties including completing the electronic dispatch log and filing police reports. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

High School Diploma and six months related experience or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications
Four+ years of dispatching experience. EMD EFD, EPD, BLS, EMT, Utah Post Certification, UCJIS, BCI. (Licenses/Certifications:) Must obtain BCI Basic TAC certification within six months of hire and maintain certification during employment.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Police dispatch, and National Crime Information Center (NCIC)) operator functions.
  • Knowledge of computer systems (Spillman) used in law enforcement agencies, including NCIC and related equipment.
Skills
  • Skills in the principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Skills in basic operations, services, and activities of a training program.
  • Skills with appropriate office procedures, methods, and equipment knowledge.
  • Types a minimum of 40 wpm.
  • Skills in the use of computers, phones, and radio systems.
Abilities
  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgement and to act resourcefully under varying conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively with people in potentially volatile situations.
  • Ability to cope effectively with stressful and demanding public interactions.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality related to sensitive administrative and legal information.
