Job Summary:

This position is responsible for managing a large, multi-year, federally funded biomedical research contract awarded to CU Anschutz Medical Campus. This role will oversee, coordinate, and execute complex activities for a priority research initiative, with activities relating to some or all the following: project integration, scope, schedule, cost, quality, resourcing, communications, risk, procurement, and stakeholder/subaward engagement. This position will work closely with the co-principal investigators, scientific project manager, and grant administrators to ensure the project is on time, on budget, and within scope. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience successfully managing other high-level research projects that are of considerable size, scope, and complexity ($10M+).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Launch, facilitate, and oversee day-to-day management of project plans for research performed at CU Anschutz, including managing cross-functional scientific, administrative, and/or project team meetings; timelines; research operations and complex project logistics; etc.
  • Develop and continuously improve systems, workflows, communication tools, and standard operating procedures to increase efficiencies for collaborative work, data tracking/reporting, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department of Surgery grants team to monitor fiscal performance, identify budget concerns, and develop/implement resolutions to align with institutional, project, and sponsor requirements.
  • Responsible for all procurement, accounts receivables, payments and deposits on a monthly basis. Create purchase orders, requisitions, payment vouchers, requests for SPO's, and SPO vouchers in the CU Marketplace system
  • Assist operations manager with tracking inventory list for all laboratory equipment.
  • Liaise with Department postaward team for budgetary and funding updates and other grant related changes and regulatory requirements.
  • Anticipate and orchestrate proactive resolutions to challenges/roadblocks that could compromise the CU Anschutz team's ability to meet milestones. If needed, work with the Office of Research Development and Strategy/Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research to escalate and resolve issues that require campus-level solutions.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of various aspects/requirements of the project and how they are interconnected to be an expert resource for other team members, inform the development of streamlined operational plans and timelines, and ensure the team remains in compliance with the sponsor. A technical understanding of science is not required, but the candidate will be expected to become well versed in the terms of the contract, key deliverables, the relationship between scientific and payment milestones, etc.
  • Communicate with and manage relationships among diverse scientific and administrative partners (internal and external), including at subaward organizations, to ensure short- and long-term project and/or sponsor goals/needs are met.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • Four (4) years professional level research experience

    A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • Five (5) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
    • Project Management Certification is not required but preferred.
    • Experience with milestone-driven research contracts from funders like ARPA-H, BARDA, DARPA, etc., and/or complex grant awards (e.g., NIH P01, U19, U54 mechanisms).
    • Experience working in university or academic medical center settings and close familiarity with associated research processes.
    • Experience with CU Anschutz Medical Campus research initiatives, systems, and policies.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Expert knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
    • Exceptional project management and organization skills, with the ability to oversee multiple initiatives/projects/tasks simultaneously, deliver high-quality results, and handle/meet multiple deadlines.
    • Expert ability to analyze and solve complex problems
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
    • Outstanding customer service skills
    • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
    • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
    • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information

    Anticipated Pay Range:

    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $63,529-$80,809

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
