DESCRIPTION


Mendocino College is seeking a full-time categorically funded Licensed Vocational Nursing Program Director/Instructor to implement and sustain the new Licensed Vocational Nursing Program. This position reports to the Dean of Career Education and the Assistant Dean of Health Careers. The first year of employment will be focused on director duties. Starting in the Fall 2026 the position will shift to 50% directing and 50% instructing assignment.

As Program Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for accreditation and maintaining the program according to the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals, directing and participating in educational planning, program organization, development, and participating in training of faculty, evaluating program faculty and student performance, motivating and advising students and participating in developing and maintaining the program budget.
This is a full-time categorically funded non-tenured position that offers an 11 month contract (193 days). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 182 instructional/director days and eleven (11) professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers.

SALARY, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS


Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary offered at $72,287 - $100,687. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective at the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403{b) programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

Teaching
  • Instructs in a full range of courses in the LVN Program
  • Educates in varied environments including the skills lab, clinical setting, online (using Canvas), and/or lecture environment;
  • Maintains clinical competency with current practice and content expertise per the BVNPT requirements;
  • Arranges clinical experiences complying with agency requirements;
  • Conducts classes and finals as included in the schedule of classes; prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments; teaches class hours; evaluates student's performance based on quizzes, comprehensive examinations, finals and/or other assignments appropriate to the course outline; teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes; prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
  • Reports prepared and on time for classes;
  • Posts and maintains student contact hours;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices;
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports.
Department
  • Attends department meetings;
  • Participates in program development and revision;
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification and deletion;
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
  • Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; and
  • Collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline.
Institution
  • Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees;
  • May supervise student workers in the nursing discipline;
  • Participates in the development of an annual budget for the discipline, submits purchase orders, maintains related records; participates in the completion of program review;
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance;
  • Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline; conducts a periodic inventory of equipment;
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges; and
  • Actively engages with program advisory committee.
Program Duties
  • Implements and reviews annual program goals; determines and established program processes and procedure;
  • Coordinate instructional staff to assure instruction is provided which follows approved curriculum and achieves program objectives and outcomes;
  • Participate in generating necessary reports including, but not limited to, BVNPT Annual Accreditation Report, self-study reports, and reaccreditation reports;
  • Participate in any and all on-site visits deemed necessary by BVNPT;
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with all clinical affiliates;
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings;
  • Oversees the student application process for admissions to the program.


QUALIFICATIONS


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Per the California Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Nursing, a director of a vocational nursing program shall:

  • Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; and
  • Have a minimum of three years experience as a registered nurse; one year shall be in teaching or clinical supervision, or a combination thereof, in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or a minimum of three years experience in nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years; and
  • Have completed a course or courses offered by an approved school with instruction in administration, teaching, and curriculum development

ADDITONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Didactic and/or clinical teaching experience;
  • Experience in administration/management;
  • Experience in direct patient care;
  • Familiar with BVNPT rules of practice and procedure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Have strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and advising skills.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Nursing research, evidence-based practice, online teaching, clinical instruction; critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making related to the practice of Nursing.

ABILITY TO:
  • Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques, including on-ground and online teaching with Canvas;
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; update course materials to reflect current vocational nursing practice;
  • Assess student academic progress; communicate effectively with students and hospital staff regarding student expectations, course requirements, evaluation procedures and other program requirements;
  • Stay current in the subject areas taught through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities;
  • Evaluate faculty;
  • Maintain records;
  • Prepare reports;
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others;
  • Demonstrate respect for the rights and needs of students;
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
