The Department of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Bucknell University invites applications for a one-year position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August 2025.

We seek a broadly trained teacher-scholar with a Ph.D. in Classics, Ancient History, or related fields. (Candidates in the final stages of completing degree requirements for a PhD will be considered.) Candidates should have demonstrable evidence of teaching success and must possess expertise in the history and cultures of the Roman Mediterranean, and Latin language and texts. Candidates should expect to teach a range of courses that focus on the language, history, culture, religions, and other aspects of ancient culture in the Roman period. The normal teaching load for a replacement VAP is six courses per academic year. In addition, candidates should be able to teach courses of broad appeal within (and potentially beyond) regular departmental course offerings. We seek a teacher-scholar who has a demonstrated commitment to providing high impact educational practices (writing intensive courses, interdisciplinary courses, global learning, etc.) that would appeal to a broad and diverse university audience.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a CV, and statement of teaching philosophy. Your application should establish your interest in working at a primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution. Include how your experiences, knowledge, skills, and/or past accomplishments will contribute to equitable and inclusive teaching, broadly defined as including classroom instruction, advising, mentoring, and other educational experiences.
