Job Description:
As a leader on the Digital Team within the Division of Marketing, the Director of Web Development creates and sets strategic direction for web development on Syracuse University's flagship digital properties. The Director will lead a team of highly technical front- and back-end developers and a DevOps specialist to make strategic decisions in the creation of high quality, world-class digital experiences for all audiences, regardless of device, across the University's digital landscape. The Director of Web Development will create, articulate and set web development standards and processes for the creation of services, features, and components used to develop and maintain the central web properties of Syracuse University. The Director will assist with integrations between existing systems and research of new systems and technologies, collaborating and working closely with the Marketing Technology team to ensure consistency across platforms and content management systems. This leader will guide their team as they partner with the division and campus partners to ensure a secure, accessible and user-friendly digital presence, providing assistance where and when needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Create and direct strategic priorities, and provide guidance on technical and quality assurance standards for the university to facilitate development of best of breed digital applications and services. The Director has authority and influence to innovate and set standards across the University's flagship digital platforms. Responsible for ensuring websites and relevant applications adhere to security, accessibility and code standards. Serves as product owner and operational manager for the development of enterprise web applications.



  • Direct, provide oversight and direction for team of developers and DevOps specialist, ensuring standard-compliant coding (e.g., security, accessibility, etc.) is used to develop and implement components, templates, features, and functionality. Provides effective leadership to the team, supporting a positive work environment, a high level of team engagement and a culture of accountability. collaborates with digital strategy, UI/UX, Marketing Technology and other internal and external partners and stakeholders to prioritize a development roadmap and will champion features which provide the most value and best experiences for our audiences.

  • Manage development projects from start to finish ensuring on-time delivery and quality assurance standards. Sets direction, provides mentorship, determines technical standards, and collaborates with team on decisions to facilitate future web development projects.Offers guidance to the team during design, development, and testing phases and holds accountability for the overall solution.

  • Serve as subject matter expert influencing technical decisions and advising internal teams and campus partners. Partner with analytics team to develop strategic approaches to web analytics, tagging, and tracking. Collaborate with Marketing Technology team to ensure platform consistency and other internal division teams to ensure strategic, user-friendly approaches to digital products. Facilitate collaborative coding opportunities for the University developer community.

  • Debug and troubleshoot website issues as needed. Monitor analytics, logs, and reports. Keep abreast of industry trends, tools and best practices. Ensure websites meet accessibility requirements, are optimized for search, maintain mobile responsiveness, and meet performance standards.
