Job Summary

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2025.
The position is part of a cluster hire in the area of Climate Physics and Mathematics with linked positions in the Departments of Physics and of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. The Earth's climate is affected by physical processes at work in the cryosphere, ocean, and atmosphere and the study of these processes involves a wide array of methods: observational, experimental, theoretical, and computational. Collaborations between physicists, mathematicians, and climate scientists are needed to make progress across many of the most challenging problems in climate science. CU Boulder is uniquely poised to rapidly become the leading institution in the world in the field of climate physics and mathematics. The campus already has the necessary foundation in place: CU Boulder is the only R1 university in the US with a group in the Physics Department dedicated to Geophysics; the Department of Applied Mathematics is similarly committed to the Earth sciences through its Mathematical Geosciences and Computational Mathematics groups; and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences is one of the strongest atmospheric and oceanic sciences departments in the world.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Department of Applied Mathematics is home to 20 tenured and tenure track faculty members whose research span computational mathematics, nonlinear mathematics including nonlinear dynamics and waves, mathematical biology, physical applied mathematics, probability, and statistics. The Department sits at the crossroads of the university's two largest colleges, being rostered in the College of Arts and Sciences while teaching students in College of Engineering. For more information see http://www.colorado.edu/amath.
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder is home to five Nobel laureates, four National Medal of Science winners, nine MacArthur "Genius Award" winners, 40 Fulbright Scholars, and 25 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. CU-Boulder is the only university in the Rocky Mountain region in the American Association of Universities, a group of the nation's leading research institutions.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The Department of Applied Mathematics is seeking candidates whose research develops, analyzes, and applies innovative mathematical methods to study the fundamental physical components of the climate system: Atmosphere, Oceans, and Cryosphere. Research of interest includes, for example,
  • Development and analysis of fundamental mathematical or statistical models of physical processes in the climate system
  • Development and analysis of new computational methods to advance Earth system model accuracy and efficiency
  • Development, analysis, and application of new, advanced data science methods to observation or simulation data

Laboratory space is available, and the department welcomes applications from scholars whose research includes an experimental component.

What You Should Know

This position requires a commitment to supporting the diverse student populations in our department and its associated campus educational mission, a dedication to teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs and developing and conducting an innovative independent research program. The department firmly believes that the effectiveness and creativity of a group is strengthened by contributions from a broad range of perspectives. As such, we particularly welcome candidates from groups that are historically underrepresented in our field and/or candidates who demonstrate leadership toward building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment.
