ABOUT THE POSITIONLong Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenure Technical Theatre - Scenic Design Professor commencing with the fall 2025 semester. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trades and Technical campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theatre arts/performance
    OR
  • Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theatre arts/performance
    AND
  • Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities
    OR the equivalent

    Local Equivalency Statement
    A bachelor's degree in Theater, or a related field (such as those listed under Minimum Qualifications) with at least five years full-time equivalent professional work in the field in such areas as; directing, acting, scenic design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, projection/video design, theatre management, theatre intimacy, theatre movement and/or stage combat, and other related theatre work involving creation and performance of theatre.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Evidence of an ability to address and adapt to the instructional needs of varying student levels, using a variety of innovative, culturally relevant and responsive teaching strategies, as well as equity minded pedagogy, to encourage retention and student success in a wide range of theater courses.
    • Recent community college or lower division teaching experience.
    • Demonstrated experience in set design, including proficiency in building scale models, drawing set renderings, ground plans, set construction, and scenic painting. Additional experience in other design and technology areas (lighting, sound, props, stage management) is also desired.
    • Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Scenic and/or lighting design
    • Commitment to work with students in activities outside of the classroom is essential.
    • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
    • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
    • Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of the college.
    • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to work with computers, and other technologies in order to provide high-quality classroom and lab instruction, including set design computer programs
    • Willingness to develop new curricula and innovative materials for instruction.
    • Proficiency in building scale models, drawing set renderings, ground plans, set construction and scenic painting.
    • Creativity, flexibility, imagination and dedication are necessary to effectively perform the duties of this position.
    • Fulfilling three design responsibilities each semester. Demonstrated versatile range of scenic design training, knowledge of design history and styles, and experience.
    • A successful candidate will contribute to the artistic and intellectual growth of our department while ensuring the safety and quality of our productions.
    • Demonstrated ability to work closely with directors and designers to facilitate construction and completion of scenic
      design elements within production timelines, budget, and standards.
