Assistant or Associate Professor of Multifunctional Landscapes

The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Multifunctional Landscapes. This is a tenure-line position with a 75% research and 25% teaching appointment. The position comes with a competitive start-up package and salary based on 36-weeks of service annually, which can be supplemented with additional salary up to a total of 48 weeks from external competitive grants and contracts and/or from endowment funds. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate level, commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate's research will focus on balancing diverse human needs (e.g., food, water, energy, timber, recreation) with the needs of fish, wildlife, and other non-human species (e.g., habitat, water availability, healthy soils) at landscape scales. While any area of landscape-scale research will be considered, some areas of particular interest include managing forested landscapes to optimize the water-energy-food nexus, designing landscapes that maximize carbon storage and serve as buffers against natural disasters (e.g., fires, floods), and land use strategies to conserve fish and wildlife habitat while meeting human needs. Teaching responsibilities will include an undergraduate course in remote sensing and spatial data analysis and a graduate course in remote sensing applied multifunctional landscapes. This hire is part of departmental effort to build expertise in Biological Solutions to Climate Change, which seeks to make ecosystems more adaptive and resilient in the face of environmental change, while promoting sustainability and mitigating the worst impacts of climate change on humanity.

Qualifications. Individuals must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Forestry, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or related field with degree requirements complete by the application date. A strong publication record is required, as is evidence of (or potential for) securing extramural research funding from local, federal, and international agencies. The ideal candidate will work at regional, national, and/or global spatial scales using tools in remote sensing, GIS, mobile platforms (planes, drones, gliders, etc.), spatial statistics, and/or landscape modeling. The position is open to those who study any type of ecosystem; however, those with emphasis on forested systems will receive preference. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the University is required.

Application. Interested individuals are invited to apply at REQ_0000062848 at https://hr.psu.edu/careers. Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three references, three representative publications, statement of research experiences/future interests, statement of teaching pedagogy/interests, and a reflection of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging document. Applicants are also encouraged to weave evidence of their commitment to fostering inclusivity throughout their application material. Questions about the application process should be directed to Mary Jo Schillings at mjs9@psu.edu. Review of applications will begin February 7th, 2025.
