Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Senior Director, the Training Director is responsible for primary oversight of the training programs at the University of San Francisco's IACS-accredited Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) including an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology, an APPIC-member post-doctoral fellowship, and an advanced practicum training program. The CAPS training program is currently thriving with broad institutional, CAPS leadership and staff support. The accreditation of the doctoral internship program was reaffirmed by the American Psychological Association in 2022 for the maximum length of time of 10 years.

The Training Director provides vision, coordination, and leadership for the CAPS training programs as well as administrative support and training for staff involved in the provision of supervision and training. The Training Director reviews and develops procedures for implementation of programs; facilitates internal evaluation of trainee services and supervision, and manages recruitment for training programs. The Training Director also provides psychological services to support a multiculturally diverse student body.

    Full Job Description:
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Program Administration
    • Develops and administers training programs in accordance with standards of accreditation and guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA); ensures adherence to standards of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC)
    • Oversees participation and compliance in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) selection and matching process for internship programs.
    • Administers training programs in collaboration with CAPS leadership and with respect to balancing center clinical service delivery needs, changes in center policies and procedures, needs of campus community stakeholders, shifts in local, state and national legislation, and expectations of accrediting bodies.
    • Maintains APA Accreditation for the Doctoral Internship Program including writing self-studies, facilitating site visits, completing APA annual reporting data, communicating substantive changes to the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) and compiling and submitting evaluation data as required; maintains APPIC membership including annual directory updates, submitting required data and documents.
    • Develops and maintains all training related public and internal materials annually including, training program website pages, program brochures and manuals, and training seminar syllabi, etc. in accordance with accreditation and national standards.
    • Oversees development of new training programs if there is need and capacity within the Center.


    Recruitment
    • Develops, manages, and coordinates processes for trainee recruitment including application evaluation, interviews, and selection/ranking for the APA accredited doctoral internship, the post-doctoral fellowship, and advanced practicum training programs. Annually, reviews candidate applications for these programs.


    Curriculum
    • Ensures training curriculum is in accordance with accreditation and professional standards and makes adjustments as appropriate.
    • Develops, coordinates, and facilitates orientation schedules for all training programs and provides administrative support and consultation for staff involved in training.
    • Oversees and coordinates the weekly Didactic Inservice and Summer Supervision, Program Evaluation, and Professional Development Seminars; develops and presents subject matter for these and other training seminars.


    Supervision
    • Coordinates supervisory assignments; provides administrative supervision to clinical supervisors and communicates training-related policies and updates; facilitates bimonthly supervisor meeting to proactively address supervisee/supervisor needs and encourages ongoing professional development in areas related to supervisory competence.
    • Provides weekly group supervision for the doctoral intern cohort and individual supervision for the post-doctoral fellow; provides additional clinical supervision and crisis supervision in support of the training program as needed. Reviews and provides constructive feedback on intakes, progress notes, crisis management documentation, termination summaries, and video recorded sessions, generates mid and end-of-year comprehensive written evaluations for individual supervisees.


    Monitoring Progress/Evaluation
    • Monitors progress of all training cohorts, supports and intervenes as needed; fosters the professional growth & development of trainees.
    • Obtains and compiles mid- and end-of-year performance-related evaluations of trainees and maintains trainee records, in accordance with accreditation standards and requirements.
    • Uses competency grounded evaluation processes as a basis for assessment of trainee progress and response to trainee skill development, including writing formal remediation and training plans and implementing in accordance with due process procedures, when indicated.
    • Conducts supervisory meetings each semester with each trainee to assess progress and outcomes of their training.
    • Communicates with trainee home institutions regarding progress, and in the case of trainee difficulties in fulfilling their clinical or professional responsibilities.
    • Solicits formal and informal program evaluation from trainees and senior staff; obtains and compiles mid- and end-of-year performance-related trainee evaluations of supervisors.
    • Evaluates the efficacy of the training program and implements appropriate changes and enhancements that satisfy accreditation requirements and the service needs of the Center.


    Professional Development
    • Maintains active memberships in relevant training professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA), the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), and the Northern California Counseling Center Training Directors group; attends annual/biennial training conferences of these professional organizations contingent on available funding.


    Other
    • Assumes delegated functions from the Senior Director pertaining to internal management of CAPS and executes other duties as assigned.


    Clinical Services and Responsibilities:
    • Maintains current, valid license to practice psychology in the state of California and develops professional skills, including obtaining the required continuing education for each 2-year renewal cycle (including supervision training).
    • Provides culturally affirming clinical services within a brief therapy model (including individual, group and couples therapy) supporting the mental health and well-being of a multiculturally diverse student body.
    • Conducts triage and intake assessments to assess risk, determines suitable treatment, including appropriateness for a short-term therapeutic modality, and provides referrals on/off campus for students whose mental health needs are outside CAPS scope of services.
    • Provides crisis intervention services, including assessing suicidal or homicidal risk. Makes appropriate referrals and/or facilitates off-campus hospitalization, as needed.
    • Maintains timely and thorough documentation of case files; maintains knowledge of ethical principles as articulated by the American Psychological Association and California laws of the profession and provides all services in keeping with these standards.
    • Works as a member of a team regarding agency administrative functioning (providing coverage, training, developing policies and materials, etc.)
    • Provides information and referral for individuals who are ineligible for CAPS services.
    • As part of the CAPS on-call rotation, provides 24-hour crisis consultation to the Office of Community Living, Division of Student Life, Public Safety, and other administrative units of the University (approximately 2-3 weeks/semester).
    • Provides follow-up to callers who utilized CAPS after-hours phone consultation line, as needed.
    • Provides consultation and mental health information to faculty, staff, administrators, families and students regarding student behavior, mental health, and academic challenges to enhance the campus climate for student success.
    • Provides educational outreach services to campus groups as requested. Serves as guest lecturer on relevant professional topics as requested by faculty.
    • Collaborates with other campus resources to provide crisis debriefing' to the campus community in the event of community trauma.
    • Participates in weekly case conference seminars.
    • Attends weekly staff and senior staff meetings.
    • Participates in staff/professional development activities.
    • Serves on interdepartmental hiring committees and interviews candidates as requested.
    • Represents the center at campus events and serves on campus-wide committees as requested.


    Required Qualifications
    • An earned doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program. Candidate must have completed an APA-Accredited Doctoral internship in psychology.
    • Licensed or License eligible as a Psychologist in the State of California. If License eligible, must have an active license as a psychologist in another state. If unlicensed in California at the time of hire, must obtain a license within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
    • 3+ years post-licensure experience providing clinical supervision and training at the doctoral and/or post-doctoral level.
    • Strong leadership and excellent organizational, administrative, written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive data reports
    • 5+ years post licensure experience providing clinical services to a diverse population of college-aged clients, preferably within a university counseling center
    • Extensive knowledge of evidence-based and culturally informed clinical services and brief therapy; ability to assess, manage, and ensure high quality clinical service provision, including significant knowledge and experience with crisis management and legal and ethical decision-making.
    • Proficiency in word processing, e-mail, presentation and spreadsheet software; ability to use scheduling and charting database; Zoom Health or other HIPAA compliant video platform.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in administration of a clinical training program at the doctoral level (e.g., internship, practicum, post-doctoral fellowship), preferably an APA accredited internship training program in health service psychology.
    • Knowledge of health service psychology accreditation training standards and requirements.
    • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role preferably in a University Counseling Center


    Other information
    • This position may require some evening hours and occasional weekend duties, particularly during peak periods related to trainee recruitment and selection processes, and in response to campus crises and outreach-related requests.
    • Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
