Position Summary:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Idaho seeks candidates for a full-time tenure track or tenured faculty position in Geological Engineering at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor. Rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidate meets the criteria outlined in the college and department bylaws.
We are seeking candidates with interest in emerging areas and/or geological engineering topics of significant societal importance such as rock mechanics, tunnelling, excavation and materials handling.
Many of the solutions needed to combat climate change, such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and rechargeable batteries, rely on the availability of critical minerals. In June 2024, the United States Congress advanced the Mining Schools Act, which requires the Department of Energy to award up to 10 grants each year to mining schools for recruiting and educating mining engineers and other qualified professionals to meet future energy and mineral needs. Assuming this becomes law, the proposed program meets the requirements set forth in the Act for these funds (i.e., a geological engineering degree accredited by ABET).
The successful candidate will teach both traditional geological engineering courses, as well as develop new courses in their specific area of expertise. The CEE Department is committed to quality education and has high expectations for teaching excellence. The candidate will advise/mentor both undergraduate and graduate students and provide leadership in developing an accredited curriculum for the recently approved Bachelor of Science program in Geological Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong externally funded research program that supports graduate students and results in high-quality publications and foster relationships with industry partners.
The CEE department is committed to a productive and collegial environment.
Unit/Department Summary:

The department is in the process of developing an undergraduate program in Geological Engineering with the cooperation of industry partners from the state and region.
The department is also in the midst of a highly successful fundraising campaign to renovate educational infrastructure and increase student support with three new/renovated labs underway: an Advanced Computing Laboratory, the Ardurra Water Laboratory, and the Tamarack Grove Engineering Structures Laboratory.
