Job Description:

The School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Madison College is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator - Art (Ceramics) to join the school. This position will provide the necessary administrative and technical assistance to support students and faculty in the Art Department in the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

The Laboratory Coordinator - Art (Ceramics) is responsible for maintaining the ceramics studio, ensuring safety, organization, and functionality. Key duties include kiln operations, organizing student work, preparing recycled clay, and managing inventory. The Laboratory Coordinator - Art (Ceramics) collaborates with instructors and the department chair to order materials, maintain records, and ensure equipment is in good working order. Additional tasks include glaze preparation and maintenance, assisting with atmospheric firings, and enforcing student safety, including proper waste disposal and use of protective gear.

This role emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and safety, with regular tasks like vacuuming, mopping, and decluttering. The person in this position will also complete basic kiln maintenance and repair and troubleshoot problems. The Laboratory Coordinator - Art (Ceramics) provides student training on equipment use, maintains OSHA-compliant safety standards, and organizes materials with clear labeling and assist student workers in organizing open lab hours and related tasks. The coordinator will also collaborate with staff to address facility needs, maintain open communication, and foster an inclusive and respectful educational environment for students and colleagues.

This is a part-time, 20-hours per week, 38-weeks per year position. General working hours between 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, with flexibility to determine schedule with supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Performs lab set up and take down; assemble, prepare, and arrange required materials, models equipment for student and facility usage as required. Prepares models, materials, and equipment for student projects.
  • Assists in the maintenance of other Art lab and classroom spaces (such as for jewelry, drawing, design, and painting)
  • Assists in art-related events such as student shows and gallery display.
  • Assists students & instructors and reinforces faculty instruction.
  • Develops and maintains safe practices and procedures for the handling and use of materials and electrical hazards for use by staff and students. Manages all safety- and security-related items, including Safety Data Sheets, eyewash stations and first-aid kits.
  • Within College regulations, policies, and procedures, performs purchasing duties for assigned equipment, supplies and/or services; obtains and, as assigned, may evaluate bids, sets up appropriate vendors and suppliers; prepares requisitions and purchase orders as assigned; coordinates with vendors to ensure equipment, materials, supplies, and services are appropriately applied.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by performing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturers' instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and technologies.
  • Analyzes, collects, treats, and ensures proper disposal of waste created in each lab following Madison College and EPA guidelines.
  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values. Complies with college policies, directives, and work rules.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the related principles and procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate the methods, procedures and concepts as taught by instructor.
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment, tools, and/or software.
  • Knowledge and ability to oversee safety policies.
  • Ability to fire electric and gas kilns and mix glazes.
  • Ability to install, fix and maintain art lab equipment and classrooms/labs.
  • Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs.


Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience. *Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.
  • Two (2) years of work experience directly related to the skills required for successfully performing this position.
