Job Summary:
Bucknell University is seeking a Controls Technician I or II, to join our HVAC team. This position is responsible for the repair, maintenance and operational management of the campus HVAC systems and associated controls including the BAS (building automation system). Responsibilities for equipment include all components related to HVAC systems, such as DX systems, hydronic systems and components, fans and fan motors, pumps and pump motors, electronic and pneumatic controls, as well as safety devices, overcurrent protection, and other equipment protection mechanisms.

Shift:
- This is normally a first shift, weekday position, but may require occasional weekend and shift work to respond to call ins as required to address campus emergency issues.
- This position is classified as part of essential services, and is required to report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by facilities supervisor, or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety.
What You'll Do:
Technical | 60% | Troubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment, including but not limited to: chillers, air handling units, energy recovery units, dx systems, hydronic systems. Troubleshoot and correct the building automation system (BAS). review alarms and trends to identify issues and correct them. Utilize the BAS to identify energy - electrical or thermal (steam, chilled water) savings and improve operations.
Project and Trades Support | 25% | Provide support for projects including executing system outages as required and attending project walk-thrus. Support plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other trades as needed to facilitate university operations.
Preventative Maintenance | 15% | Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as, changing filters, cleaning coils, greasing bearings, etc.
Other duties as assigned: Participates in all aspects of program and department planning and in the establishment of department goals and objectives.
What You'll Bring:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent with strong math and shop background.
Professional Work Experience:
- Tech I: Three years commercial/institutional experience in the operation, maintenance, inspection, installation and modification of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, controls and associated components OR two year technical degree from a qualified technical or trade school with emphasis in HVAC along with one year commercial/institutional experience.
- Tech II: Five years commercial/institutional experience in the operation, maintenance, inspection, installation and modification of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, controls and associated components OR two year technical degree from a qualified technical or trade school with emphasis in HVAC along with three years commercial/institutional experience.
- A valid driver's license and ability to drive University vehicles.
- Thorough working knowledge of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and associated pneumatic, electronic and other programmable logic controls.
- Working knowledge of electrical, oil, gas, steam, and condensate systems and associated equipment.
- Thorough working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the HVAC trade as well as applicable federal, state and local health and safety code requirements.
- Familiarity with standard industry safety procedures related to the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment, use of tools and equipment, personal protective equipment, etc.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications to determine layout for mechanical systems.

Preferred, but not required:
Education: Two-year technical degree from a qualified technical or trade school with emphasis in HVAC.
Professional Work Experience:
- Work with industrial HVAC systems.
- Universal refrigeration certification.
- Computer literacy, proficiency with work order management software.
- Knowledge of electrical systems.
- Knowledge of University Procedures, and experience with integrated databases such as: TMA (work order management), Workday (Human Resources management) and scheduling software.
Physical Requirements:
- Lift and carry 75 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to move around the entire work site including climbing ladders, stairs and scaffolds and entering confined areas and crawl spaces.
- Must be able to perform work in a safe manner and adhere to department's safe practice guidelines, including but not limited to trenching, lockout/tagout, and confined spaces.
- Requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to maintenance work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
- Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors, including daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather and temperature changes.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
