Job Summary:
The Department of Dermatology has an opening for a Program Director to lead its Dermatology Residency Training Program. This position is key in shaping the training experience for our 18 dermatology residents and ensuring the program meets accreditation standards. The Program Director works closely with faculty, residents, and medical institutions to maintain a high standard of education, clinical training, and research opportunities.

The Department of Dermatology's educational mission is to train future leaders in dermatology by cultivating a rigorous, innovative, and inspiring learning environment. We prepare residents to be outstanding clinicians, in both the inpatient and outpatient spaces, who are also well prepared upon graduation to advance the field as researchers, educators, advocates, and scholars.
The University of Colorado's Dermatology Residency is a large, academic training program. Our 18 residents (including senior Chief Resident) proudly contribute to excellent patient care at our four main clinical sites: UCHealth (our quaternary, 1,000-bed university hospital), Children's Hospital Colorado, Denver Health (a top 10 safety net county hospital), and the Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Medical Center. Our program provides innovative training for future leaders in dermatology including two pathways: traditional pathway and research-intensive physician-scientist (two-plus-two) pathway. The residency is built around an innovative schedule that allows for growth as well as an intentional and thoughtful curriculum. Upon graduation, many of our trainees pursue subspecialty fellowship training and matriculate into careers in academic environments.
The Program Director (PD) provides the vision, mission, and operational leadership for a world-class residency program. A successful PD will be a role model to faculty members and an inspiration to residents and students as they display unwavering professionalism, outstanding patient care, and a scholarly approach to their role. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in educational excellence and be a dynamic, transformational leader. Additionally, they will be expected to work as part of an interdisciplinary, interprofessional team to create an educational environment that promotes high-quality care, patient safety, and resident well-being.
Compliance with Accreditation Standards
- Maintain accreditation: Ensure that the residency program meets the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or other relevant accrediting bodies.
- Program reviews: Participate in periodic ACGME program reviews and assessments, addressing any gaps or areas for improvement annually/biannually/monthly.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable program requirements.
Curriculum Development and Oversight
- Design and update the curriculum: Ensure that the residency program offers a comprehensive and up-to-date curriculum covering all aspects of dermatology, including medical, surgical, pediatric, and cosmetic dermatology, as well as pathology.
- Educational content: Develop and implement educational resources, lecture series, and didactic training sessions that align with the latest dermatologic practices.
- Competency-based training: Ensure residents meet the competencies required for successful practice, including clinical skills, patient care, communication, and professionalism.
Resident Selection and Admissions
- Recruitment: Oversee the recruitment process, which includes reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and selecting residents based on merit and program fit.
- Diversity and inclusion: Work to promote a diverse and inclusive training environment.
Clinical Training Supervision
- Direct supervision: Supervise residents during clinical rotations, ensuring they receive appropriate mentorship and exposure to a wide range of dermatologic cases.
- Feedback and evaluations: Monitor residents' performance, provide regular constructive feedback, and assess their progress through written and clinical evaluations.
- Workload management: Balance the clinical responsibilities of the residents to prevent burnout and maintain a productive learning environment.
Mentorship and Career Guidance
- Professional development: Provide guidance on career planning, fellowships, job opportunities, and academic pursuits.
- Research guidance: Support residents in engaging in research, offering advice on projects, presentations, and publications.
Administrative and Organizational Responsibilities
- Faculty coordination: Manage relationships with teaching attending physicians, clinical staff, and other faculty members to ensure smooth functioning of the program.
- Budget and resources: Oversee the budget for the residency program, ensuring that resources for residents (e.g., educational materials, research support) are sufficient.
- Workplace policies: Develop and enforce policies related to resident work hours, patient care, professionalism, and wellbeing.
Resident Wellbeing and Support
- Addressing resident concerns: Be a point of contact for residents' concerns, from academic struggles to personal issues, ensuring their wellbeing and academic success.
- Promote work-life balance: Foster an environment that supports mental and physical health and professional development.
Quality Improvement and Innovation
- Continuous improvement: Engage in initiatives for quality improvement in the residency program, exploring new methods of teaching, evaluating residents, and enhancing clinical training.
- Incorporating innovation: Ensure that emerging trends, technologies, and research in dermatology are integrated into the training curriculum.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Department leadership: Work alongside the dermatology department chair and other program directors to align residency goals with the broader vision of the institution.
- Networking: Collaborate with other residency program directors, national dermatology associations, and institutions to stay current with educational trends and share best practices.
Professional Development
- Continuing education: Engage in ongoing professional development to remain an expert in dermatology and medical education.
- Leadership role: Act as a leader within the institution, advocating for the dermatology residency program, and participating in relevant meetings and committees.
Additional Duties
- Oversee the selection, guidance, and evaluation of the Chief Medical Resident.
- Supports and provides mentorship for Chief Resident.
- Provides direction and support for the Associate Program Director.
- Provides oversight support for the residency administrative operations.
- Works closely with residency program coordinator.
- Attends GMEC meetings and represents the Department of Dermatology at these meetings.
- Maintains open communication with the Chair and Vice Chair of Education to keep them informed of program changes and for recommendations related to the program.
- Assists Vice Chair of Education in directing the quarterly fellowship committee meeting for all departmental fellowship program directors.
- Attend annual national meetings to advance programmatic innovations, career development, evaluation, and achievement of clinical competencies and actively participate in efforts to improve residency training nationally.
- Actively participates in clinical meetings related to patient care and residency training to ensure patient care needs, regulations, and operational procedures and policies are met in relation to the provision of resident patient care.
- Works closely with hospital leadership at all sites to ensure adequate space and rotations for assigned residents.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:
Associate Professor:
- An M.D. or PhD degree.
- Board-certification by the American Board of Dermatology.
- At least three years of documented educational/administrative leadership (GME training program leader) with experience educating dermatology residence or fellows (per ACGME requirements).
- 5 years' experience in clinical dermatology
- Eligible for Medical Licensure in the state of Colorado.
- Fulfill the requirements to be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Colorado.
Professor:
- An M.D. or PhD degree.
- Board-certification by the American Board of Dermatology.
- At least three years of documented educational/administrative leadership (GME training program leader) with experience educating dermatology residence or fellows (per ACGME requirements).
- 7+ years' experience in clinical dermatology
- Eligible for Medical Licensure in the state of Colorado.
- Fulfill the requirements to be appointed at the rank of Professor at the University of Colorado
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience as a program director, associate program director, or comparable leadership role within an accredited graduate medical education program.
- Understanding of the legal, regulatory, and accreditation issues pertaining to graduate medical education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner both in writing and orally.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
Associate Professor: $282,001 - $302,367
Professor: $302,074 - $332,440
The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at 0.2 FTE salary support. It is expected that the candidate will couple this FTE with one or more of the tripartite mission areas (research, clinical care or teaching) to equal a 1.0 FTE. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
