Position Summary: The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus. This position is exempt from the State of North Carolina Human Resources Act (EHRA).
Western Carolina University (WCU) seeks a dedicated administrator, who is committed to the success of students, to lead the Department of Intercultural Affairs (ICA). The Director is responsible for direct oversight of ICA and ensures that the department prepares students for success through engagement, leadership development, and exposure to different perspectives. Through ICA's space and programming, the Director will create and maintain an environment where all students can respectfully explore individual differences in thoughts, ideas, beliefs, backgrounds, and viewpoints.
The Director reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students and is a key leader within the Division of Student Affairs. The Director ensures that ICA programs and initiatives align with the university's mission, comply with all applicable laws and policies, and uphold principles of academic freedom, viewpoint neutrality, and respect for different perspectives.
Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and assessing educational programs that promote cultural awareness, civil discourse, and overall student success. The Director also manages compliance, making sure that policies and practices meet required standards and that all students are served. The Director has oversight of program assessment that guides continuous improvement of ICA's initiatives.
In addition, the Director oversees staff, graduate students, and student workers, providing training and support to ensure effective operations and efficient resource use. Working closely with campus and community partners, the Director represents ICA on university committees and acts as a liaison among students, faculty, and administrators.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this Position:
- Articulated knowledge of or experience in supervision of professional staff, budget management, and program development at an accredited university of higher education.
- Demonstrated ability to articulate complex issues and tailor messaging to a diverse range of audiences.
- Strong understanding of current Higher Education trends and tools, and ability to stay aware of quickly changing national rules and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this position:
Minimum Qualifications: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship from the employer. Masters degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Education, Counseling or related field with highly transferable skills. A minimum of 4 years of full-time Student Affairs experience with progressive leadership duties. Articulated knowledge of or experience in supervision of professional staff, budget management, and program development at an accredited university of higher education.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to articulate complex issues and tailor messaging to a wide range of audiences. Strong understanding of current Higher Education trends and tools, and ability to stay aware of quickly changing national rules and regulations. Experience of training in policy compliance and assessment, including continuous improvement.
