Job Summary
The Research Computing team at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Storage Administrator! This position performs independently, with main responsibility for the PetaLibrary research data storage service, and coordinates with other HPC systems and network administrators to provide access to storage resources. The position carries secondary responsibility for HPC scratch storage and other storage resources. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Systems Administration
- Diagnosing, solving, and implementing solutions for the RC infrastructure, including cluster, storage, and core systems. May include hardware repairs, operating system configuration, system software updates, and procedure automation. Assist with network hardware and network service maintenance and configuration. Respond to end-user queries.
- Test and tune storage and data-transfer systems to increase performance and reliability. Identify and address performance bottlenecks. Build configuration management to standardize storage systems. As appropriate, implement changes to storage infrastructure to meet new demands and ensure supportability and data reliability.
- Monitor storage infrastructure utilization and system metrics to anticipate and address failures within redundancy limits; develop automation for the monitoring and alerting process. Build or enhance observability of the storage infrastructure including alerting and trending.
- As appropriate coordinate ordering, installation and build of new storage infrastructure to ensure the team can continuously meet growing customer demand.
- Maintaining and/or documenting in support of the RC infrastructure.
- This position will investigate new technologies that support tactical and strategic objectives. This position will also build, test, and evaluate new technologies to recommend their applicability to key organizational and program objectives.
- Changes to infrastructure, advances in technology, and changes in regulatory expectations may identify performance constraints or opportunities to particular system infrastructure objectives. This position will evaluate potential products or techniques to provide insight into new program projects and services before they are necessary that will help the organization remain relevant and to evaluate opportunities in a timely manner.
- This role will maintain professional expertise in the field by reviewing trade publications lists, studying the latest vendor trends, reviewing pertinent mailing lists and attending seminars, training sessions and conferences. This position will identify and elect relevant training opportunities that would be most beneficial to the organization.
What You Should Know
- This position is in a hybrid work environment, primarily working in the office on Tuesdays.
- The position carries with it a general expectation to respond to critical issues and incidents that arise outside of normal business hours within a reasonable time frame, as defined by the position's supervisor. This expectation is consistent with commitments RC has made with customers that many of its services will have "best effort" coverage outside of regular business hours.

- The annual hiring range for this position is $97,700-$109,925.

What We Require
- Bachelor's Degree in science, engineering, or other related field. A combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
- Detailed knowledge of and 4 years professional experience in a combination of the following:
- Management and operation of ZFS in any Unix environment (e.g., Solaris, BSD, or Linux).
- Management and operation of networked storage systems in a Linux or other Unix environment (Red Hat Enterprise Linux preferred).
- Management and operation of aggregate storage systems, including one or more of RAID and clustered object storage.
- At least 1 year of experience working in a High Performance Computing and/or Research Computing organization.
What You Will Need
- Demonstrable ability to work in a many-user networked Linux or Unix environment, including a mixture of unprivileged and privileged access.
- Exceptional ability to work optimally both within a team and also independently, as circumstances warrant.
- Demonstrated ability to follow through with assignments and commitments in a timely and professional manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work from a set of requirements to assemble an independently-proposed solution.
