The Athletics Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking highly-qualified individuals to be our Senior Certified Athletic Trainer! The incumbent will be responsible for providing leadership over clinical protocols, records maintenance, and day-to-day sports training and injury rehabilitation, administering preventative care to athletes to ensure the reduction of injuries and providing rehabilitative treatment to care for sports-related injuries utilizing modern physical therapy techniques, equipment and exercise programs. An incumbent administers first aid to athletes during practice sessions and sporting events and advises and counsels students regarding injuries and rehabilitation, requiring a more diverse skill set and knowledge base. We are looking for someone who leads performing a variety of additional moderate to complex tasks which require advanced technical knowledge as well as, the ability to independently use sound judgement and initiative.   • *Eligibility list: Will be valid for 12 months once approved or ratified by the Personnel Commission. We reserve the right to use the established eligibility list for vacancies (permanent and temporary) in this classification as well as related classifications
  • Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis; however, please note that requests are typically capped at Step 3.

Duties


GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, analyzes injuries encompassing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries for student-athletes and administers preventative and rehabilitation treatment to student-athletes; administers first aid to athletes and other students; maintains training room and supplies in a clean and sanitary condition; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Senior Certified Athletic Trainer is the senior level classification in a two-tiered career path. Serving as a working leader, the Senior Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing leadership over clinical protocols, records maintenance, and day-to-day sports training and injury rehabilitation; administering preventative care to athletes to ensure the reduction of injuries, and providing rehabilitative treatment to care for sports-related injuries utilizing modern physical therapy techniques, equipment and exercise programs. An incumbent administers first aid to athletes during practice sessions and sporting events and advises and counsels students regarding injuries and rehabilitation, requiring a more diverse skill set and knowledge base.

The Senior Certified Athletic Trainer is distinguished from Certified Athletic Trainer in that incumbents in the latter class are responsible for routing duties related to health screenings, preventative and rehabilitative care measures, schedules, first aid and emergency care, ordering supplies, inspection of athletic facilities for safety, cleanliness, and whereas incumbents in the former serve as leads performing a variety of additional moderate to complex tasks which require advanced technical knowledge as well as, the ability to independently use sound judgement and initiative.

Qualifications


Education, Training and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in physical therapy or physical education with an emphasis in athletic training or a closely related field, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the conditioning and treatment of student-athletes. Candidates graduating after 2022 will require a Master's degree in physical therapy or physical education with an emphasis in athletic training or a closely related field, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the conditioning and treatment of student-athletes; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40- hour week, unless specified otherwise. Prorated part-time experience may be acceptable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  1. Current, valid certification as an Athletic Trainer, Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
  2. Current, valid CPR and First Aid certification. Maintain CEU's to remain certified.
  3. May require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.

Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

  • If you participate in and fail any examination segment, you must wait a period of 90 days (~3 months) to test again for the same classification.

Selection Process:

The following examination segments are pass/fail and may be utilized during the selection process:
  • screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience
  • scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application/ subject matter expert (SME) review. *** Please answer each question thoroughly as they will be read and scored by SMEs***
  • in-person or online:
    1. written examination(s)
    2. qualifications appraisal oral examination
    3. performance examination
    4. technical oral examination
      (the above will be scored on a job-related basis)
