Job Description Summary
This position will ensure expert veterinary care and welfare support to the transplant medicine investigators and research animal community in the Department of Surgery for the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
The successful candidate will support the veterinary care needs of Transplantation Medicine research teams in PSOM and assist with teaching efforts for veterinary students, externs and residents in the Division of Comparative Medicine & Research (DCM&R) within ULAR.
In brief, this position will provide clinical veterinary care of transplanted surgical animals, assist in animal protocol creation and amendments, investigator training and consultation, and other duties to ensure compliance with accrediting and regulatory organizations. They will play a critical role on the medical and surgical team, working to effectively consult on animal models, developing veterinary care guidance and policies, and assisting with operative and therapeutic procedures in a wide variety of species. Ideally the candidate should have experience in regulatory aspects of protocols and IACUC service, particularly related to USDA-covered species.
To ensure compliance with AAALAC accreditation expectations, the candidate will have dotted line reporting to the Attending Veterinarian; and, as the candidate may need, any clinical and surgical consultations will be conducted in partnership with the ULAR Director of Clinical Care and the ULAR Assistant Director of Surgical Model Development Services.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
- Provide clinical, diagnostic, surgical, and medical veterinary care to a wide variety of research models involved in the transplant immunology program across the funded grant programs in the Department of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine. For compliance will have dotted-line affiliation to the Attending Veterinarian per AAALAC accreditation expectations.
- Provide regulatory advisement and oversight for the performance of IACUC-approved experimental surgeries and procedures on behalf of Principal Investigators. Assist labs with species selection, protocol development, amendments, anesthesia support, and surgical or procedural model refinement.
- Service within ULAR for teaching of students, resident mentorship, and clinical collaboration as needed to improve the overall animal and clinical care operation for the University. Support regulatory compliance across ULAR animal areas and facilities. Share on-call rotation duties for back up after hours support with other ULAR clinicians.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college or ECFVG/PAVE foreign equivalency certification.
- Qualifications for or completion of ACLAM board certification.
- Active veterinary license in at least one U.S. state; must be eligible to acquire a Pennsylvania (PA) veterinary license if not already licensed and USDA accreditation in PA.
- Must be eligible for DEA controlled substances registration.
- Experience with and interest in medical care and surgical support of a wide range of animal species is required.
- Current and relevant working knowledge of animal research regulations and guidelines and experience in assembling protocols and compliance reviews.
- Evidence of collaborative research efforts.
- Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a dynamic team environment; excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in computer software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
